This year, the Rotary Club of Pittsburgh will hold its 10th annual Chuck Tanner Awards Banquet on Saturday, November 12, 2016 at the Rivers Club in Downtown Pittsburgh.  The nationally recognized fundraising event honors the spirit of the late, great Chuck Tanner and his passion for baseball.

As the only major all-baseball dinner in the region, the Chuck Tanner Awards Banquet will once again feature five prestigious baseball awards that will be presented with the help of our master of ceremonies, Joe Klimchak, the Pirates’ In-Game Host at PNC Park.

Each year our Tanner Selection Committee, whose members are Major League Baseball professionals from all over the country select the Chuck Tanner MLB Manager of the Year shortly after the regular season ends.  Last year’s winner, Jeff Banister of the Texas Rangers, attended the banquet and graciously accepted the award from former winner Clint Hurdle.  This year the honor goes to Dusty Baker of the Washington Nationals.

On November 12, we will also present the Chuck Tanner Lifetime Achievement Award to a Pittsburgh sports figure who has been outstanding both in their field and in the community during their career.  This year our Lifetime Achievement winner is Bob Pompeani, KDKA-TV Sports Anchor.  Our third award, the Tanner Memorial Award is given to an individual who has had a significant and positive impact on Pirates’ baseball over the past season.  This year’s honor goes to fan-favorite and Pirates’ catcher Francisco Cervelli.  Our fourth award is the Tanner Collegiate Baseball Head Coach of the Year Award and goes to an area college or university head coach whose team had a great season and whose coaching emulates that of Chuck Tanner.  This year’s Tanner Collegiate Head Coach award will be presented to Jon Shehan of Millersville University.  And, our final award, the Sally O’Leary Distinguished Women in Baseball Award, was named after our first recipient and is presented to a female who has contributed greatly to the game.  Our 2016 awardee is Kim Ng, Senior VP of Baseball Operations at MLB.

Prior to the start of the Banquet, we also unveil an original piece of baseball-related artwork by Celebrity Sports Artist and Disney Master Artist, Kevin-John, which is created specifically for this event.  Each person in attendance receives a full-size, lithograph print of the artwork as our gift.  Last year’s subject, the ninth in a series, was his rendering of PNC Park and as always, Kevin-John was on hand to sign each one.  Come and see who will be this year’s subject.  In addition, there are live and silent auctions, raffles and other opportunities to win great prizes throughout the evening.

The Chuck Tanner Awards Banquet is a great event for baseball fans of all ages and has been supported by the Pirates and the Tanner family since its inception.  Proceeds from the banquet help to fund the Rotary Club of Pittsburgh operations and our local and international foundations that sustain programs such as:

    •    Annual High School Ethics Symposium
    •    Scholarships for graduating high school students
    •    Student of Distinction program
    •    Rotary Youth Leadership Awards program
    •    Monthly New Citizens Reception
    •    Polio Plus (International Eradication of Polio)
    •    Two Roberto Clemente Clinics in Nicaragua
    •    Hekima Place(Orphanage/School) in Nairobi, Kenya

So, we invite you and your family, friends and colleagues to attend a great evening of baseball in honor of Chuck Tanner, while supporting the many programs and projects of the Pittsburgh Rotary Club.
